Education and Employment Opportunities in Savannah, GA

Savannah Georgia is well known for its state university and other colleges and institutions of higher learning. Founded by General James Edward Oglethorpe in 1733 with a group of not more than 100 English settlers as first city of Georgia, Savannah today has a population of over 140,000. Situated on the banks of the Savannah River, the town was named as Savannah after the native word for the river. Drawing on the export of agricultural products such as rice and cotton, the town grew and survived through wars and the Great Depression. After the Union Bag and Paper Company opened a large plant west of the city, the city's economy got another turnaround!!

The movement to preserve the historical features of Savannah in 1950s by a few wise ladies had proved to be boon to the city both in terms of preservation and business. Savannah School of Architecture and Design

Savannah School of Architecture and Design (SCAD) has 23 majors focused on art and design. All students start with a core curriculum in liberal arts and fine arts. Minors are offered in all majors as well as in complementary areas such as dance, electronic design, interaction design, marine design, museum studies, sculpture, urban design and development, and writing.

All the undergraduate, graduate and certificate level programs of Savannah School of Architecture and Design challenge students to perform at a high level and prepare them for high profile careers in the visual and performing arts, design, the building arts, and the history of art and architecture.

Heritage Education

Citizens of Savannah take great pride in their heritage and some of the institutions are taking keen interest for furthering the cause.

The well-known Georgia Historical Society ensures future for Georgia's past. In addition to housing one of the finest collections of material available on Georgia, the Society has an impressive list of programs, publications, and other activities. It offers various membership programs and tours; statewide assistance in preserving local history through its Affiliate Chapter Program and Historical Marker Program; the Georgia Heritage education program; and annual Antiques Show and Sale.

Massie Heritage Interpretation Centre

Massie Heritage Interpretation Center hosts professional development opportunities through SCCPS Professional Development office and two Teaching American History Grant programs, as well as other training opportunities for K-12 social studies educators.

Center for Creative Youth (CCY)

CCY summer residency offers talented high school students five weeks of intensive study on the Wesleyan University campus. Students attend classes from 9:00 am - 3:30 pm. Major offerings are in Theater/Musical Theater, Music, Dance, Technical Theater, Creative Writing, Visual Arts, Film Making and Photography.

Coastal Georgia Center

The Center is a state of the art meeting and conference facility for businesses, managed by Georgia Southern University, and located in the heart of historic, downtown Savannah. In addition to housing numerous seminars, meetings, workshops and conferences, the center is also a forum for continuing education and professional development classes. These classes are offered through the center itself, Georgia Southern University and also through its partner institutions - Armstrong Atlantic State University and Savannah State University

Environment Education

Situated downtown Savannah on a marsh island, Oatland is an environmental education center owned and operated by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System. It serves primarily as a field trip site for both public and private school children from throughout the region, but it is also open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. and most Saturdays from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m. for self-guided trail walks. More than forty different programs are available to students ranging from an hour-long barn animal program to two-and-half hour programs on endangered species, the salt marsh, forest, tidal creek and marine ecology.

Management Education

Georgia Tech College of Management, the business school at Georgia Tech, offers executive education programs at the Georgia Tech Savannah campus.

The executive education programs offered include Business Strategy, Innovation Management, Leadership, Marketing, Six Sigma, and Technology for the Non-Technical Manager. Six Sigma is one of Georgia Tech’s most popular executive training programs. Program participants can earn either a Green Belt or Black Belt certification.

The introduction of these executive programs represents an important and logical extension of the commitment of Georgia Tech Savannah to technology education in the Coastal Georgia.

The Georgia Tech Savannah campus is located next to the Savannah International Airport and only minutes from historic downtown Savannah. Opened in September 2003, the campus houses world-class instructional and research facilities.
