Savannah State University is the oldest Black universitySavannah Georgia is well known for its state university and other colleges and institutions of higher learning. Founded by General James Edward Oglethorpe in 1733 with a group of not more than 100 English settlers as first city of Georgia, Savannah today has a population of over 140,000. Situated on the banks of the Savannah River, the town was named as Savannah after the native word for the river. Drawing on the export of agricultural products such as rice and cotton, the town grew and survived through wars and the Great Depression. After the Union Bag and Paper Company opened a large plant west of the city, the city’s economy got another turnaround!!
